Your First Visit
We look forward to meeting you in Lenexa, KS! During your initial appointment, our team’s priority is to learn everything we can about you and your dental needs. After our hygienists have gathered basic information, Dr. Craig will sit down with you to discuss your previous experiences with dental care, as well as your likes and dislikes about the process and any specific concerns you have about your current state of oral health. A cleaning and cursory exam will be provided, as well as our recommendation over whether or not a more comprehensive look is needed. This is performed at a separately scheduled appointment.
Oral Cancer Screenings
The statistics surrounding oral cancer are simply staggering – on average, one person dies every hour from this condition, and only half of those diagnosed this year will go on to live five more years. This occurs because most cases of oral cancer aren’t caught until it’s reached advanced stages, making recovery much less likely. That’s why our team provides oral cancer screenings as a vital part of exams. By locating areas of potentially cancerous cells right away, we can better protect our patients and help them achieve a happier, healthier future.
X-rays have become wholly necessary for diagnosing oral health conditions and planning treatment with an ideal amount of accuracy. Dr. Craig offers digital technology for this vital process, which eliminates many of the pitfalls of traditional X-ray machines. There are no more darkrooms and no more tedious waits – we can capture images and transfer them to our computer system in just a few seconds for convenient viewing. It’s also much easier to send your X-rays to insurance companies or outside specialists with this method. Best of all, the amount of radiation patients have to be exposed to is reduced by up to 90%.
Dental Check-ups & Cleanings
Patients with generally good oral health should attend routine check-ups with our team at least twice a year, or once every six months. Dr. Craig may recommend more frequent visits if you’re in need of further support because of periodontal disease or an oversensitivity to decay. Our exam is designed to identify areas of damage or decay at the earliest stages and will include the surfaces of each tooth, the gums, the bite, the jaw, any existing restorations, and more. Once we fully understand your oral health, Dr. Craig will sit down with you to discuss the findings and make recommendations for treatment, if needed.
Thorough cleanings from one of our excellent hygienists will provide your smile with valuable assistance as well. The sticky, bacteria-filled substance known as plaque is constantly forming over your teeth, causing potential damage until it’s cleared away with diligent brushing and flossing. If areas are missed, the plaque can harden into tartar, which can no longer be removed so easily. During these routine visits, our team can professionally cleanse these areas, leaving your mouth feeling refreshed.
There are several spots in the mouth where decay and food particles are more likely to accumulate and cause damage, such as the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Dental sealants can be used to “seal” these areas shut, minimizing the presence of bacteria. Dr. Craig typically recommends sealants for younger patients who are still learning to care for their teeth, or adults who suffer from excessive sensitivity to decay.
Your temporomandibular joints are small, but just one small misalignment can leave patients with excessive pain and a decreased quality of life. Dr. Craig has participated in extensive study to understand and treat these issues, and your jaw function is in good hands with our team. Splint therapy, occlusal equilibration (bite adjustment), and other solutions are available. Visit our TMJ Therapy & Headache Relief page to learn more.
